Tips for controlling sound for a quality sleep

What does this have to do with melatonin?
Nothing. We're throwing it in as extra help - including free MP3 files.

A personalized serenade awaits us tonight - yapping dogs, arguing neighbors, cars, sirens and more. Even small sounds can rouse light sleepers. Some of us then take hours to drift off again - if we're lucky.

What to do? You can block the sounds with ear plugs. Or you mask them with a low-level background noise, of which there are two types -

 White Noise   - A noise that has the same loudness at all frequencies, such as static from a television not receiving a signal.

 Pink Noise   - Like white noise but with variations, like the sound of waves on a beach.
Both noises occupy our hearing in a soothing way and effectively cancel out offending sounds.

Wear ear plugs Cheap, portable Uncomfortable, can fall out.
Dial a radio or tv to a channel with no signal Can work very well. Intermittent interference, requires second radio or clock as an alarm.
Run an air filter machine Perfect for home. Extra cost, not portable.

Play a CD or MP3 of soothing noise. Variety of quality sounds. Extra cost for CD and player, short pause between tracks and at restart.
Buy a soothing sound machine. Perfect all around, portable. $30 (US), must get the right features.
